Lab Grown diamonds are real diamonds. They are grown in laboratories that use technologically advanced equipment to replicate the earth’s natural process. Lab grown diamonds are beautiful and more affordable than mined diamonds.  The diamonds are chemically, optically and physically identical to earth-mined diamonds.

Lab Grown diamond is the result of a technological process, as opposed to the geological process that creates natural diamonds. Lab diamonds have essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure, optical, and physical properties of diamonds found in nature. Most Lab diamonds are categorized as either high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamonds, depending on the method of their production. Since HPHT and CVD diamonds are virtually identical to natural diamonds, differences only become clear when they are analyzed in a gem laboratory. GIA tests every diamond to determine if it is natural. If a diamond is found to be laboratory-grown, GIA issues a Synthetic Diamond Grading Report, which looks distinctly different from the standard grading report. As an added precaution, GIA also laser-inscribes the diamond’s girdle with a report number and a statement that the diamond has been laboratory-grown.

Mined Diamonds VS Lab Grown Diamonds

Lab Grown diamonds are growing in popularity as shoppers understand their true origin and value.

Mined diamonds cost more because the mining process is intensive. It requires expensive equipment, time, and a lot of hard labor. On the other hand, Lab diamonds cost less simply because the mining process is eliminated.

There is not a right or wrong decision whether you choose Mined or Lab Grown. You may choose a mined diamond because you feel they are a natural wonder of the Earth. Or you may select a Lab Grown diamond because you see them as an eco-friendly alternative.
